WASHINGTON, March 24 --Pharmaceutical companies are moving swiftly to market their own generic versions of a drug that has taken off in a bid to boost sales for arthritis drug Celebrex, the company said Friday.

Celebrex, an over-the-counter pain reliever, is a painkiller for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis, a class of conditions that can affect joints. It is approved for use by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, but it has not been approved for use by the U. market. The drug has been available in over-the-counter versions since 2004.

Celebrex is used to treat arthritis and other painful conditions such as pain that occurs on joints in joints, such as the hands, knees, ankles, or feet.
